# What brain regions are denoted as M1ul/M1lm and S1ul/S1lm?

Hey all,

I’m looking through the human transcriptomics explorer and I noticed the above terms. I’m guessing M1/S1 is in regards to the primary motor cortex and primary sensory cortex but I’m struggling to understand the difference between the ul/lm suffix.

If you could let me know that would be really helpful, I couldn’t find any information.

These regions are the upper and lower limb regions of primary motor and somatosensory cortex. The abbreviations ul and lm come from our [reference atlas](http://atlas.brain-map.org/atlas?atlas=265297126#atlas=265297126&plate=112360888&structure=10165&x=40317.8671875&y=46978.1328125&zoom=-7&resolution=124.49&z=3) (e.g., click on the + next to M1C in the hierarchy).
