The ABC Atlas has been updated with a host of new options for customizing your views. These changes came directly as a result of suggestions from scientists and there’s more on the way. Thank you for your feedback and keep those requests coming!
Point color override
Our data sets come with default colormaps that are selected intentionally to align metadata colors with paper publication figures and across data sets on our platform. In some cases, however, you may want to manually select specific colors for accessibility, to help clearly distinguish similar colors, or to align with external data, for example.
To set your own colors for a feature value:
-
Color a view by the desired feature
-
Click on a cell with the feature value with a color you wish to change
-
Click the pencil icon that appears over the current color dot to reveal the color picker
-
Select the new color using the tools provided or enter a specific value in the text box. Note that the arrows on the right of that box may be used to select different formats (Hex, RGB, or HSL)
-
Your changes will be saved automatically. Overridden colors will be noted with a small dot

-
To undo any changes and revert to default colors, click the strikethrough paintbrush icon at the top of the cell properties panel
Dock the cell info tooltips
You can now pin the tooltips to the corner of the frame to create a clearer view of the area around your cursor.
- Click on a cell to open the tooltip
- Click the boxed arrow to dock the info card to the bottom left
- As you move your cursor, the information in the tool tip will reflect the properties of the cell(s) directly under your cursor. If you move your cursor out of the frame, the tooltip will disappear. Repositioning your cursor within the frame will restore the tooltip and relevant information.
- Click the boxed arrow again to return the tooltip to cursor-following mode.
Note: Your choice will be stored locally and remembered across sessions. Changing browsers or clearing browser history will disrupt this.
Sort feature values by cell counts
It is now easier than ever to see which values are highly represented in a subset of cells. Values under metadata fields have a default sort applied initially, but sometimes it’s helpful to reorder those values according to their distribution, especially after applying other filters.
Click the sort icon in the feature header to reorder the values from highest to lowest cell count. Click the icon again to revert to the default order.
Finer point size adjustments
The point size slider now allows much finer-grained control, letting you select exactly how large the points appear. You can also access these controls without going into the View settings using Ctrl + scroll on your mouse.
Disable highlight on hover
We heard from you that the cell size changing under your cursor (formerly known as Hover Sync) could sometimes be more distracting than helpful. We’ve adjusted this setting to allow you to disable the highlighting in the active frame.
As always, thank you for being part of the Allen Institute community. Please let us know how we can improve the ABC Atlas to better serve your needs.
